Quick answer: what you actually need

Before the lists, the honest answer: a nursery does not need to be Pinterest-perfect. Babies need a safe, firm sleep surface, a way to be fed, a place to be changed, and warmth. Everything else is convenience layered on top of those four pillars.

The 7 categories that matter are: (1) safe sleep, (2) feeding, (3) diapering, (4) clothing storage and dressing, (5) sound and light control, (6) seating for caregivers, and (7) monitoring. This checklist walks through each one with specific brand examples, weight limits, and the safety standards each item must meet.

One number to keep front of mind: the CPSC receives reports of approximately 100 infant sleep-related product incidents per year tied to non-compliant sleep surfaces. Buying the right crib and mattress from the start is not optional.

Safe sleep: the non-negotiable foundation
