Our methodology
How we test, score, and recommend baby and toddler products. Every category has a published protocol.
The basics
- Real testing with real children. Every product is tested for a minimum of 30 days with a child in the relevant age range. We log usage hours and conditions.
- Credentialed authors only. Each review is written by a credentialed author (pediatric RN, IBCLC, OTR/L, or PhD) whose expertise matches the product category.
- No paid placements. We accept no payment from manufacturers. Products are purchased at retail or sent without obligation.
- Safety standards checked. Before publishing, we verify the product meets the relevant CPSC, AAP, NHTSA, or FDA standard.
- CPSC recall search. We search the U.S. CPSC recall database before every review and re-check before every refresh.
Scoring
Each review uses a 5-section scorecard on a 0-10 scale. Sections vary by category but always include Build Quality, Safety, Ease of Use, and Value. We do not score sections we have not measured.
By category
Car seats
Standard: FMVSS 213 (federal motor vehicle safety standard). We verify CPSC and NHTSA registration, check harness installation across 3 vehicle types, log fit on 5 child sizes, and check for current recalls. Our reviewer is a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST).
Cribs and sleep products
Standard: CPSC 16 CFR 1219 (full-size cribs). We verify slat spacing (less than 2-3/8 inches), mattress fit, and adherence to AAP safe sleep recommendations. We do NOT recommend any product that conflicts with the AAP Safe Sleep guidelines.
Bottles and feeding
Reviewer: International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). We test flow rate, nipple shape, sterilization compatibility, and reflux performance over a minimum of 4 weeks of daily feeding.
Toys
Standard: 16 CFR 1500 (small parts choking hazard). Reviewer: Pediatric Occupational Therapist (OTR/L). We verify age range, choke-test small parts using the CPSC small-parts cylinder, and check magnet pull on magnetic toys.
Strollers and carriers
Standard: ASTM F833 (strollers), ASTM F2236 (carriers). We log 60+ hours of real-world use, weight on a calibrated scale, fold and unfold times, and storage capacity.
