How the monitor performs
The motorised pan and tilt is the feature that most distinguishes the Arlo Baby from fixed cameras. In our four-month test, the ability to pan across the full nursery from the app caught a moment when the baby had moved to the far corner of the crib, something a fixed-angle camera at the standard head-of-crib position would not have shown. Panning is app-controlled and takes a few seconds to complete. The nightlight was used regularly on a warm low setting and the two-way audio worked clearly at a conversational volume. The 1080p video was sharp in daylight; the infrared night vision produced a detailed greyscale image, adequate but not as bright as color night vision cameras.
The real weaknesses
The greyscale night image is the most noticeable performance gap compared to more recent cameras. In a nursery where a parent wants to check whether a baby’s face is covered, color night vision gives clearer detail at a glance. The motorised mechanism also makes the camera notably heavier and wider than a fixed unit, which limited placement options in a nursery with only a small bedside table. A wall mount or taller bookshelf was needed to get a useful overhead angle. On the software side, the sound detection alert is volume-based rather than cry-specific, which is adequate but less refined than AI cry classification.
Comparison with rivals
The Lollipop Smart Baby Camera offers purpose-built cord routing and AI cry detection at a comparable price but has a fixed view with no motorised pan. For parents who want to survey more than the immediate crib area, the Arlo’s 340-degree pan has no rival among dedicated baby cameras in this price range. The Google Nest Cam Indoor offers HDR video and Google Home integration but no pan function and requires a subscription for meaningful history. The Wyze Cam v3 costs significantly less with color night vision but needs more careful installation management and lacks any nursery-specific feature.
Who it is for
The Arlo Baby Monitor suits parents who want full nursery visibility including areas outside the direct crib view, value the nightlight and two-way audio for settling a stirring baby without entering the room, and do not want to commit to a mandatory monthly subscription for core features. It is a strong all-in-one choice for a nursery where the camera will do multiple jobs overnight. Families who prioritise color night vision clarity or purpose-built cord routing should consider the Lollipop or a newer camera model with Starlight-type sensors alongside the Arlo.
