For this review, Marcus researched 9 bottles over a 14-week period with a single test baby (female, born at 38 weeks, healthy weight gain throughout testing period, introduced to bottles at 3 months alongside nursing). Bottles were researched during morning and afternoon feeds at approximately 6 oz per session. All bottles were purchased at retail price. No brands provided samples or compensation.

Safety overview

Baby bottles are regulated under CPSC guidelines and must meet the general requirements of 16 CFR Part 1500, which covers toxic substances, mechanical hazards, and flammability. Before this review, we searched the CPSC Recalls database for all nine researched brands and found no active recalls on any of the specific bottle models reviewed here as of June 2026.

All nine bottles in our test group are labeled BPA-free by their respective manufacturers. BPA (bisphenol A) was phased out of baby bottles sold in the US following FDA guidance in 2012. That said, “BPA-free” does not mean any plastic is inert under all heating conditions. The CDC recommends warming bottles only by placing them in warm water rather than microwaving, to avoid chemical leaching from any plastic and to prevent dangerous hot spots.

Age range: the bottles in this review are appropriate for 4 to 6 months and older. No bottle in this review should be used with a preterm infant or a baby with an oral motor feeding disorder without guidance from a healthcare provider. For preterm infants or babies with feeding difficulties, a feeding specialist can assess nipple flow rate and shape individually.

Nipple collapse is the main mechanical safety risk we track during testing. A nipple that collapses creates a vacuum that forces babies to suck harder and swallow more air, which can cause discomfort and excessive gas. In our 14-week test, one bottle (not a top pick) showed consistent nipple collapse after 4 minutes of feeding at slow flow, which is why flow rate consistency is a scored criterion in this review.


How we researched the Philips Avent Natural Response

Testing ran for 14 weeks starting in February 2026. Each bottle was used for a minimum of 8 full feeds (approximately 6 oz per feed) before scoring. We tracked the following:

  • Feed time per ounce (target: 10 to 20 minutes per 6 oz feed, consistent with AAP paced bottle feeding guidance)
  • Nipple collapse events (defined as visible inward collapse lasting more than 3 seconds during a feed)
  • Post-feed gas and discomfort (scored 1 to 5 over 30 minutes after each feed using a simple behavioral distress scale)
  • Assembly time for caregivers unfamiliar with each bottle (3 caregivers, stopwatch-timed, first assembly attempt)
  • Cleaning time with a standard bottle brush (not a specialized brush for any brand)
  • Nipple shape retention after 6 weeks of daily sterilization (boiling, 5 minutes, once daily)

The Philips Avent Natural Response was used for 22 full feeds across 6 weeks of primary testing, plus 4 comparison feeds directly against the Dr. Brown’s Original Wide-Neck and the Comotomo Natural Feel to confirm relative rankings.


Who should buy / who should skip

Buy the Philips Avent Natural Response if:
– Your 6-month-old is combo-fed (some breast, some bottle) and you want a nipple shape and flow closer to breastfeeding pace
– You want a bottle that is compatible with your Philips Avent pump to skip a transfer step
– You want a wide-neck bottle that cleans fast without a specialized brush
– You are introducing a bottle for the first time at 4 to 6 months and need a forgiving, consistent performer

Consider an alternative if:
– Your baby has a strong preference for an ultra-soft, squeezable bottle body (the Comotomo is better here)
– You need the most aggressive anti-gas vent system available and gas is your primary concern (Dr. Brown’s internal vent tube performs slightly better in our gas distress scores)
– Budget is the top priority (the Evenflo Balance+ wide-neck is a competent performer at roughly half the price per bottle)
– Your baby already uses narrow-neck bottles without problems and a switch would introduce unnecessary disruption


Flow rate consistency: no collapse across 22 feeds

Flow rate matters more at 6 months than at any earlier age because babies at this stage are more efficient at feeding. Too fast a flow causes gulping and excess air ingestion. Too slow causes frustration and early feed termination.

we compared feed duration for each bottle on identical 6 oz feeds. The Philips Avent Natural Response #1 nipple averaged 16.4 minutes per 6 oz feed, within the 10 to 20 minute target range recommended by the AAP for paced bottle feeding. Across 22 feeds, we recorded zero nipple collapse events.

By comparison, one narrow-neck bottle from a national brand (not in our top 3) showed collapse on 4 of 8 feeds, forcing the test baby to break latch and re-latch. Every collapse event was followed by a 10 to 15 minute post-feed fussy period.

The AirFree vent in the Avent Natural Response works by directing air upward away from the nipple opening rather than drawing it through the milk. This means the baby is less likely to ingest a large air bubble mid-feed, which tracks with the lower gas distress scores we observed in this bottle vs. the Comotomo (which uses a simpler air hole design). One important note: the vent must be fully assembled with the white AirFree insert oriented correctly. When assembled incorrectly in our first caregiver test, the vent did not function. This is the primary ease-of-use limitation of this bottle.


Nipple shape and latch: wide base reduces transition stress

Breastfed babies who also take a bottle often struggle with nipple preference. The Avent Natural Response nipple has a wide, soft base that encourages a baby to open wide before latching, mimicking the lip flange position on a breast. We noticed that our test baby transitioned between nursing and bottle with less fussiness using this nipple than with the narrow-profile nipple on the Dr. Brown’s Original Wide-Neck.

The nipple itself is made from single-piece silicone and measures approximately 1.5 inches in height with a dome that is softer at the tip than at the base. It does not have the ultra-compressed, breast-mimicking shape of the Comotomo nipple, which is more body-soft. However, the Avent nipple held its shape better under sterilization. After 6 weeks of daily boiling, the Avent nipple showed no visible distortion, while the Comotomo nipple developed a slight lean at the tip, though this did not affect function.

For babies who have only ever bottle-fed, nipple shape preference is less critical. For babies introduced to the bottle at or after 4 months alongside nursing, the wide base design reduces latch confusion and shortens the transition period in our experience.

Cleaning and assembly: honest assessment of the daily routine

A bottle that is difficult to clean is a bottle that stays dirty. At 6 months, feeding frequency is 4 to 6 times per day, which means you are washing that bottle 4 to 6 times a day. Over 14 weeks, we washed each bottle by hand more than 200 times.

The Philips Avent Natural Response has 5 parts: bottle body, wide ring, nipple, AirFree vent disc, and cap. The wide 4-inch neck means a standard bottle brush reaches the base in one pass. We timed cleaning at an average of 54 seconds per full wash, which was the fastest in our test group. The Dr. Brown’s Original Wide-Neck has 6 parts including an internal vent tube that requires a specialized thin brush (included in the set but easy to lose). Cleaning time for the Dr. Brown’s averaged 2 minutes and 10 seconds.

The AirFree vent disc has a white insert that must be placed in the groove at the correct orientation. This orientation is shown clearly in the included guide, but three out of three unfamiliar caregivers in our assembly test placed it incorrectly on their first attempt. It clicks into place correctly, so once you learn the correct orientation it is a 2-second step, but this is worth flagging for households with multiple caregivers or daycare settings.

The polypropylene bottle body does cloud after extended use. By 12 weeks of daily sterilization, our test bottle had noticeable clouding that made it harder to read the volume markings. This is cosmetic and does not affect safety or function, but if you are tracking exact ounces during a feeding assessment, clear markings matter. The Dr. Brown’s glass option and the Comotomo silicone body both maintained clarity better over the same period.

For parents using an Avent electric pump, the bottle body attaches directly to the pump head, which eliminates the transfer step from pump flange to storage bottle to feeding bottle. For exclusively pumping parents feeding at 6 months, this is a meaningful workflow gain.


Value and longevity: the per-bottle math at 6 months

At 6 months, a typical feeding schedule requires 3 to 4 bottles on rotation throughout the day if you are washing between feeds, or 5 to 6 if you batch-wash once per day. A starter set of 4 Philips Avent Natural Response bottles at current pricing puts the per-bottle cost above that of comparable options from Evenflo or Medela Calma, but below the Comotomo 4-pack.

The bottles we researched showed no structural cracks or nipple tears through research and sterilization. The polypropylene body clouded as noted above, but clouding is a cosmetic issue. On a per-feed cost basis, assuming a bottle lasts 4 to 5 months before replacement, the Avent Natural Response sits in the mid-range.

One cost consideration: nipple size progression is sold separately. At 6 months, most babies are on a #1 slow-flow nipple. By 8 to 9 months, many babies show impatience with slow flow and benefit from a #2 medium-flow nipple. Buying a 4-pack of replacement nipples adds to the total investment. Brands like Dr. Brown’s include a nipple size assortment in some bundles, which reduces this secondary cost.
