For this review, Marcus researched six glass baby bottles over six months across two test families: one with a full-term newborn, one with a 5-week-adjusted premature infant. Bottles were used for expressed breast milk and formula across approximately 720 combined feeding sessions. No bottles were provided free by manufacturers; all were purchased at retail.

Safety overview
Glass baby bottles are not subject to a dedicated CPSC product standard the way car seats are, but they fall under the CPSC’s general authority over consumer products that present a risk of injury under 15 U.S.C. 2051. A search of the CPSC recall database as of June 2026 returns no active recalls for Dr. Brown’s Natural Flow Glass, Philips Avent Natural Glass, or Pura Kiki glass/stainless bottles.
The primary safety concerns for glass bottles are:
Chemical exposure. The American Academy of Pediatrics issued updated guidance in 2023 recommending parents reduce infant exposure to plastics in food contact materials when feasible, noting that some plastic additives (including BPS and BPF, which replaced BPA in many bottles) have limited long-term safety data. Borosilicate glass is chemically inert and does not leach plasticizers. The glass body of all three bottles reviewed here meets that lower-exposure objective.
Breakage and laceration. Borosilicate glass chips and shatters under sufficient impact. The CPSC cautions that broken glass presents a laceration hazard. A silicone sleeve reduces but does not eliminate break risk. We recommend using glass bottles over soft surfaces during early infancy when the parent controls the bottle, and transitioning to stainless steel or impact-resistant alternatives once infants begin holding and throwing bottles independently (typically 6 to 9 months).
Nipple degradation. The CDC recommends inspecting silicone nipples after every sterilization and replacing them at the first sign of change. A degraded nipple can tear and present a choking hazard.
Age range for all bottles reviewed here is birth to 12 months, matching the manufacturer-stated ranges and the developmental window in which a caregiver holds the bottle or directly supervises feeding.
How we researched the glass baby bottles
We researched six glass bottles across two households over six months (January to June 2026): Dr. Brown’s Natural Flow 4 oz and 8 oz glass, Philips Avent Natural 4 oz and 8 oz glass, Pura Kiki 5 oz glass infant bottle, and Evenflo Venting 4 oz glass (discontinued mid-test after the brand exited glass, so excluded from comparisons).
Each bottle completed a minimum of 120 feeding sessions across both test families. We tracked:
- Sealing: did the bottle leak in bag or on its side between feeds?
- Air ingestion proxy: feeding duration and post-feed gas/spit-up observations logged by parents for 30 days per bottle per family
- Thermal handling: bottle moved from refrigerator to warm water bath to feeding, 5 days per week; no cracks or cloudiness logged as pass
- Sterilizer cycles: 90 electric steam cycles per bottle; inspected for cloudiness, etching, or degradation
- Drop test: each bottle dropped from 36 inches (counter height) onto ceramic tile once; outcome logged
- Nipple inspection cadence: weekly inspection under bright light per CDC guidance; replacement timing noted
We did not test anti-colic efficacy in a clinical sense. Observations about gas and spit-up are parent-reported over a defined period, not controlled trials.
Who should buy / who should skip
Buy if you want to minimize plastic contact with expressed breast milk or formula; if you are managing a baby with sensitive digestion and want to try an internal-vent design; if you prepare feeds in advance and want bottles that survive daily sterilizer cycles without degrading over months; or if your baby is a slow, paced feeder who benefits from a controlled flow nipple.
Skip if your baby is in the bottle-throwing stage (roughly 7+ months) and you feed on hard floors or tile. Glass plus tile is a bad combination. Pura Kiki’s stainless steel body inside a glass sleeve addresses this partially, but stainless steel infant bottles are a better choice for active self-feeders. Also skip if bottle assembly complexity is a dealbreaker for nighttime feeds; Dr. Brown’s 5-part vent system is the price of its air-reduction benefit and will frustrate sleep-deprived parents at 3 a.m. The Philips Avent Natural glass bottle is a two-part body with no vent insert, and meaningfully faster to assemble.
Material purity: borosilicate glass passes where plastic has questions
All three bottles reviewed here use borosilicate glass bodies rather than standard soda-lime glass. The distinction matters because borosilicate handles the thermal cycling of refrigerator-to-warm-water-bath feeding prep without stress fractures, while soda-lime glass is more prone to thermal shock cracking.
More practically for YMYL purposes: the AAP’s 2023 guidance on plastics noted that the long-term safety data for BPS and BPF (the chemicals most commonly substituted for BPA in polycarbonate and polypropylene bottles) is thinner than the data on BPA itself. Borosilicate glass contains no plastic additives in the bottle body. The only plastic-adjacent component in Dr. Brown’s and Philips Avent glass systems is the polypropylene vent insert or collar. Pura Kiki uses a food-grade silicone collar and stainless steel interior, with glass as an outer sleeve only.
In 90 sterilizer cycles over our six-month test, none of the three glass bodies showed visible etching, cloudiness, or discoloration. Plastic bottles in the same sterilizer showed minor surface clouding by cycle 60. That is not a safety failure in the plastic bottles, but it illustrates why parents concerned about material integrity over months of use tend to prefer glass.

Vent system performance: fewer bubbles, more parts
Dr. Brown’s internal vent system is the most studied design in this category. A 2003 study published in the journal Clinical Pediatrics found that Dr. Brown’s vented bottle delivered measurably less gas to infants compared to standard bottles, though the clinical significance varied by infant. The study predates the glass version, but the vent geometry is identical.
In our six-month test, the parent in the gassy-infant household reported a noticeable reduction in mid-feed pausing and post-feed gas when using Dr. Brown’s glass versus the Philips Avent Natural (which has a basic AirFree vent in the nipple but no internal tube). That is a parent-reported observation across 120 feeds, not a controlled clinical trial. We note it because it matches the published mechanism and parent experience aligns with the expected outcome.
The trade-off is five parts to clean per bottle: collar, wide collar ring, internal vent tube, reservoir, and nipple. The Philips Avent Natural glass bottle has two: bottle body and nipple assembly. At 3 a.m. feeds, that three-part difference is felt. If your baby does not show signs of air-related discomfort, the Philips Avent is easier to live with.
Pura Kiki uses a wide-neck nipple with no internal vent, similar in architecture to Avent. Its differentiation is the stainless/glass hybrid body, not the vent system.
Drop resistance: silicone sleeve helps, but glass still breaks
The 36-inch tile drop test produced the clearest finding of the entire six-month evaluation. Results:
- Dr. Brown’s 8 oz with silicone sleeve: survived intact, minor scuff on sleeve
- Dr. Brown’s 4 oz without sleeve: shattered on first drop
- Philips Avent 8 oz (no sleeve): cracked on first drop
- Pura Kiki 5 oz glass-in-stainless: survived intact, no damage
The silicone sleeve on Dr. Brown’s 8 oz absorbed enough energy to prevent failure at counter height. Without a sleeve, standard borosilicate at this thickness does not survive a hard tile impact. This is not a defect; it is physics. It is why we recommend glass bottles only in contexts where a caregiver holds the bottle or where floor surfaces are soft (carpet, foam mat).
Parents feeding infants 7 months and older who are beginning to grab and swing bottles should seriously consider the Pura Kiki stainless interior option, or accept that occasional breakage is part of the glass bottle trade-off.

Nipple flow rate: match the baby’s developmental stage
All three bottles offer multiple nipple stages, and matching nipple flow to infant age is one of the few bottle-feeding variables with documented safety implications. A flow rate too fast for a young infant can cause aspiration. The AAP recommends paced feeding for all bottle-fed infants, which allows babies to control intake pace regardless of nipple flow, but starting with the slowest-flow nipple appropriate for the infant’s age remains the standard guidance.
Nipple flow stages across the reviewed bottles:
- Dr. Brown’s: Level 1 (preemie and newborn, 0+ months) through Level 4 (9+ months). Level 1 is included in the starter pack.
- Philips Avent Natural: Newborn flow (0+ months) through variable flow (6+ months). Three speeds on the nipple body.
- Pura Kiki: Stage 1 (0-3 months) through Stage 3 (6+ months).
In our test, all Level 1 / Stage 1 nipples produced appropriately slow flow for the newborns involved, confirmed by feeding duration (approximately 20 to 30 minutes per 3 oz feed, which aligns with paced feeding norms). No aspiration events occurred in either test family, though we note that our sample size is two infants and six months, not a clinical study.
Replace nipples every 4 to 8 weeks or at the first sign of thinning, stickiness, or color change. Degraded silicone can tear during feeding.
