The Hatch Rest+ 2nd Gen, the Philips Avent model, and the VAVA Baby Night Light were each used for a minimum of 8 weeks under real overnight conditions, including nighttime feeds, diaper changes, and post-nightmare settling.
The CPSC recall database was checked in May 2026 for all three brands. No active recalls were found for the specific models listed here at time of writing. Recall status can change; check cpsc.gov/Recalls before purchasing.
Safety overview
Nursery nightlights fall under CPSC general electrical product safety requirements (16 CFR 1500) and must meet UL or equivalent listed standards for household electrical devices. Unlike car seats or cribs, nightlights do not have a dedicated ASTM or FMVSS standard, but the core hazard categories are heat, electrical shock, and cord strangulation.
The key safety rules for nursery nightlights based on current guidance from the CDC and CPSC:
- Use cool-touch LED bulbs only. Incandescent or halogen models can reach surface temperatures above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, which is a contact burn risk for mobile infants.
- Route cords behind furniture. Any cord within reach of an infant or toddler is a strangulation hazard. The CPSC identifies cord strangulation as a leading cause of furniture-related infant deaths.
- Keep the light off soft surfaces and never inside or attached to the crib. The AAP’s safe sleep environment guidance requires a firm, flat sleep surface free of all objects.
- Blue-light spectrum at night can suppress melatonin. The AAP’s healthy sleep resource notes that blue-wavelength light is the most disruptive to circadian rhythm in infants. Red and amber spectrum lights minimize this effect.
No current (June 2026) CPSC recalls apply to the Hatch Rest+ 2nd Gen, Philips Avent Digital Video Monitor nightlight function, or VAVA Baby Night Light. Always reverify at purchase.
How we researched the Hatch Rest+ 2nd Gen
Testing ran from November 2025 through April 2026. The Hatch Rest+ 2nd Gen was placed on a dresser 5 feet from the crib and 3 feet from the nursing chair in a 10 by 11 foot nursery. we compared:
- Brightness range: Using a basic lux meter, we compared light at crib mattress level at five brightness settings (10%, 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%). At 10% red mode, crib-level illumination measured 0.8 lux, low enough for a sleeping infant. At 100%, it measured 47 lux, sufficient for diaper changes without a room overhead light.
- Thermal safety: Surface temperature at 100% brightness sustained for 30 minutes measured 32 degrees Celsius (89.6 F) at the plastic housing, within safe touch range for accidental infant contact.
- App reliability: Across 180 nightly sessions, the app lost connection 4 times and required a manual toggle to reconnect. That is a 2.2% failure rate, acceptable but not zero.
- Sound machine co-use: The integrated white noise was used every night. Volume holds its setting across power cycles without reconfiguration.
The Philips Avent and VAVA models were Researched.
Who should buy / who should skip
Buy the Hatch Rest+ 2nd Gen if:
- You do multiple overnight feeds or checks and want to adjust brightness from bed without entering the room
- Your baby is sensitive to light and wakes at minor changes in the room environment
- You want one device that covers nightlight and white noise without a separate speaker
Skip the Hatch Rest+ 2nd Gen if:
- Your household does not have reliable 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi coverage in the nursery
- You want a set-and-forget device with no app dependency
- You are on a tight budget and the subscription cost adds up meaningfully over 12 to 24 months
Consider the Philips Avent option if:
- You already use a Philips Avent monitor and want integrated controls
- You want a straightforward plug-and-use light without Wi-Fi
Consider the VAVA Baby Night Light if:
- You want a portable, battery-powered option for travel or room transitions
- Simplicity matters more than precision control
Dimming precision: the feature that separates it from the rest
The Hatch Rest+ 2nd Gen’s brightness control is granular in a way that cheaper nightlights are not. Most budget models offer three fixed steps: off, dim, and bright. The Hatch app allows adjustment in 1% increments from 0 to 100.
In our research, we found we used the light almost exclusively between 5% and 15% brightness in red mode for overnight checks. That narrow band is where precision matters. At 5%, the room had enough ambient glow to navigate safely without disturbing either child. At 15%, we could read a bottle label or check diaper rash without waking the newborn.
The VAVA Baby Night Light, by comparison, has 5 fixed brightness steps. Its lowest setting measured 3.1 lux at crib mattress level, versus 0.8 lux for the Hatch at 10% red mode. For deep-sleeping infants that difference may be trivial. For light sleepers, it was noticeable in our household.
Red-light mode: why spectrum matters for baby sleep
The AAP’s healthy sleep guidance cites blue-wavelength light as the most disruptive wavelength for melatonin suppression in both infants and adults. Warm red and amber light, at the far end of the visible spectrum, has a substantially lower effect on melatonin production.
The Hatch Rest+ 2nd Gen includes a dedicated red mode that removes all blue and green spectrum output from the LED array. This is not a warm-white mode (which still contains blue wavelengths). The light appears visibly deep red, similar to a traditional darkroom safelight.
We used the red mode exclusively after 8 pm in our testing household. In 6 months, neither child showed signs of disrupted sleep onset attributable to the nightlight. That is anecdotal, not a clinical study, but it aligns with the light physics: lower blue output means less melatonin interference.
The Philips Avent unit produces warm white light with no red mode. Its lowest setting measured 4.2 lux at crib level, and the spectrum includes measurable blue wavelength content. It works, but if you are managing a light-sensitive infant it is the weaker option on this criterion.
Setup and daily use: simpler than the app suggests
The Hatch Rest+ 2nd Gen setup process took 3 minutes and 40 seconds from box to functioning light in our test. The app walkthrough is genuinely clear, and the device pairs on first attempt under normal Wi-Fi conditions.
Daily use reduces to one action: open the app and tap. Most nights in our testing, we set a dimming schedule at 7 pm (25% warm white for bedtime reading) down to 8% red by 8 pm, and the device followed that schedule without intervention. On nights when the schedule needed adjusting, the app responded in under 2 seconds.
The one operational friction point worth noting: the Hatch Rest+ does not have a physical button for brightness adjustment. If your phone is charging in another room and the baby is waking, you need to retrieve your phone before adjusting the light. The VAVA Baby Night Light has a physical tap-to-change control that avoids this entirely. For parents who prefer tactile controls over app dependency, that distinction matters.
Build quality and placement: what six months of real use revealed
The Hatch Rest+ 2nd Gen weighs 1.1 lb and stands 4.8 inches tall. The cylindrical form is stable on flat surfaces, but our dresser has a slight forward tilt, and the unit shifted twice when the AC cord was pulled taut during repositioning. Neither incident caused the unit to fall, but we added a non-slip pad under it after the first shift.
The matte white plastic housing collected fingerprint marks and showed light surface scratches after 6 months of handling during cleaning. None of the damage affected function. The LED ring itself showed no discoloration or brightness drop over the test period.
The AC-only power design is a trade-off worth understanding before buying. The Hatch Rest+ cannot be used without wall power, which rules it out for camping, hotel travel, or room transitions where an outlet is not nearby. The VAVA Baby Night Light runs on a 1200 mAh internal battery and provides up to 70 hours of low-brightness use per charge, making it a genuinely portable alternative.
For permanent nursery installation on a dresser or shelf within cord-managed reach of an outlet, the AC design is not a real limitation. For any use case involving portability, choose a different unit.
