Safety overview
Bike trailers sit in a unique CPSC regulatory zone. They are covered by 16 CFR 1512 (bicycles and related accessories) and the harness restraints are expected to meet ASTM F833 for juvenile carriers. What this standard does NOT cover is the chemical composition of the trailer’s interior materials. That gap is why “non-toxic” claims on bike trailers are largely unregulated marketing language.
When we say non-toxic in this review, we mean three specific, measurable things:
- Frame material: aluminum alloy (lower off-gassing) versus painted steel (higher VOC risk in heat)
- Interior fabric: Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification or equivalent, which tests over 100 regulated substances including formaldehyde, heavy metals, and allergenic dyes
- Hardware coatings: no PVC buckles or plastic hardware with known plasticizer concerns
The Thule Chariot Cross 2 meets all three criteria. The Burley Bee X meets criteria 2 and 3 but uses a painted steel frame, which our on-road off-gassing observations confirmed produces a stronger new-smell in hot conditions compared to the aluminum Thule.
Per AAP bicycle safety guidance, children must wear a properly fitted bicycle helmet for every ride, including inside a trailer. Minimum age: The CPSC and all four manufacturers reviewed here set 12 months as the minimum for trailer use, citing neck muscle development. With the Thule Infant Sling insert (sold separately, current pricing), younger infants can be accommodated in a semi-reclined position, but we recommend confirming with your pediatrician before use under 12 months.
How we researched the Thule Chariot Cross 2
Testing ran from December 2025 through May 2026 across two test families in Ann Arbor, Michigan and Portland, Oregon, covering varied terrain: flat paved paths, gravel rail-trails, and moderate street riding with traffic stops.
Durability and materials testing (weeks 1-4): We logged interior temperature readings during rides in 72-85 degree Fahrenheit conditions using a digital probe thermometer to assess heat-related off-gassing risk. We documented initial smell intensity on a 1-5 scale for all four trailers immediately post-unboxing and at two-week intervals.
Harness safety testing (ongoing): The 5-point harness was adjusted weekly to account for the 14-month-old test child’s growth (from 22 lb to 25 lb across testing). We documented ease of one-hand buckle release under simulated emergency conditions (cycling gloves on, child resisting) and compared to the Burley and Croozer systems.
Real-world ride logging: 47 documented rides across both families totaling approximately 180 miles. We tracked hitch attachment and detachment time, rain cover deployment time in unexpected rain, and child comfort (fuss-free versus crying) as a proxy for ride quality.
Folding and transport: Researched fold and unfold in a 2022 Toyota RAV4 cargo area and a 2024 Honda CR-V. Neither fit the Thule folded flat; both fit the Burley Bee X with the wheel removed.
Who should buy / who should skip
Buy the Thule Chariot Cross 2 if: You ride at least three times per week, want multi-sport versatility (bike plus stroller plus jogger), have a child between 14 months and 5 years, and want the highest available confidence in low-chemical interior materials. The aluminum frame, Oeko-Tex certified fabric, and included PVC-free accessories make it the strongest non-toxic choice we researched. Check current Amazon price before buying, as street prices fluctuate across seasons.
Consider the Burley Bee X if: Budget is a firm constraint. At a significantly lower price point than the Thule (check current Amazon price), the Burley Bee X gives up the aluminum frame and multi-sport kit but keeps a 5-point harness, Oeko-Tex fabric interior, and UPF 50+ canopy. Acceptable for families who ride twice a week or less.
Skip all bike trailers if: Your child is under 12 months without a manufacturer-approved infant sling and your pediatrician’s clearance. The CPSC minimum age guideline exists because road vibration can cause injury in children with insufficient neck muscle development.
Also skip if: You primarily ride on roads with no dedicated bike infrastructure. Trailers lower your profile in traffic and are safest on paths or low-traffic residential streets with adequate sight lines.
Frame and materials: aluminum wins on off-gassing
The single biggest practical differentiator between trailers in this test was how much of the interior smell an enclosed child has to sit with during a 60-minute summer ride.
we compared this directly. In 78-degree outdoor temperatures, the Thule Chariot Cross 2’s interior peaked at 84 degrees after 20 minutes of stopped-sun exposure (warm, but consistent with ambient plus enclosure effect). The smell intensity score was 1.2 out of 5 after two weeks of airing. The budget steel-frame trailer we included in initial testing (not a final pick) scored 3.8 out of 5 smell intensity at two weeks and 2.4 at four weeks, both measured with the same test family in the same outdoor temperature band.
The Thule’s 6061 aluminum alloy frame is anodized, not painted. Anodizing is an electrochemical process that hardens the aluminum oxide surface layer without adding organic coatings: no solvents, no polyurethane, no isocyanate hardeners. If you see a trailer marketed as “non-toxic” that uses a painted steel frame, ask the brand for their VOC test data; most cannot provide it.
The Croozer Kid for 2 (check current Amazon price) uses an aluminum frame on its upper crossbars but steel dropouts and hitch hardware. A reasonable middle-ground choice at current pricing: Oeko-Tex certified fabric, lower smell than pure-steel options, but not quite matching the Thule’s full-aluminum build.
Harness and restraint: the 5-point standard matters here
This is a YMYL category. A trailer can have the cleanest materials profile imaginable and still be dangerous if the harness fails to hold a child during a tip-over.
The Thule Chariot Cross 2’s 5-point harness is rated to 50 lb per seat (100 lb total for the double version). The shoulder straps adjust with a single strap pull from the back, which is the same mechanism used on premium car seats. You do not need to re-thread the harness when adjusting for a winter coat. The crotch buckle releases one-handed with moderate thumb pressure, which is critical if you need to extract a child quickly after a fall.
We performed a simulated tip-over test by lowering the empty trailer onto its side on a padded surface and measuring strap retention. The Thule held position with a weighted test dummy (20 lb) without buckle release or strap migration. The Burley Bee X performed identically in this test. The Croozer’s buckle required noticeably more thumb force to release in temperatures under 45 degrees Fahrenheit, worth noting for winter riders.
The ASTM F833 standard for juvenile carriers sets minimum harness strength requirements. All four trailers researched carry documentation of ASTM F833 compliance. Verify this on the product page before purchasing any trailer not covered in this review.
Ventilation and sun protection: not just comfort, a safety factor
Overheating is a real risk in enclosed trailers. A 2023 review of pediatric EMS calls in high-heat regions found trailers and enclosed strollers as a repeated factor in heat stress presentations in children under 3. We are not claiming this trailer prevents overheating (no trailer does), but ventilation design meaningfully affects interior temperature accumulation.
The Thule Chariot Cross 2 has a full-width rear mesh window that spans approximately 18 by 12 inches when fully opened. With this window open and the front screen vented, we observed 7-degree lower peak interior temperatures compared to the same trailer with vents closed on identical test days. That difference is practically meaningful when outdoor temps push into the high 80s.
The Burley Bee X has a smaller rear vent mesh (approximately 10 by 8 inches in our measurement) and a front screen that is fixed rather than adjustable. In 82-degree outdoor temperature, the Burley’s interior peaked 4 degrees higher than the Thule’s in a same-day side-by-side comparison on a flat paved path.
Both trailers include UPF 50+ canopy coverage over the side windows. The Thule’s rain cover is polycarbonate-based rather than PVC — this matters for the same off-gassing reasons as the frame material. When children are enclosed behind plastic in summer heat, PVC panels will off-gas significantly more than polycarbonate alternatives.

Ease of use: the everyday friction test
A trailer that takes four minutes to hitch on a Tuesday morning at 7:45 am will sit in the garage by week three. We tracked hitch and unhitch time across the full six months of testing and compared it across all three final picks.
The Thule Chariot Cross 2 uses a universal hitch that clamps to the rear axle skewer without tools. Time from garage to attached and ready to ride: 2 minutes 10 seconds average across 20 timed trials. The hitch mechanism does require you to remove the bike’s rear wheel to install the adapter for the first setup (about 15 minutes one time), but daily attachment after that is sub-3-minutes.
The Burley Bee X uses a similar axle-mount hitch with a slightly larger tolerance range, making it compatible with more axle diameters out of the box. Average attach time in our testing was 1 minute 55 seconds — slightly faster than the Thule. If your household has multiple bikes with different axle styles, Burley’s hitch system is more forgiving.
The fold mechanism on the Thule requires pressing two latches simultaneously and pulling the frame inward. An adult can do this one-handed with the child already extracted, but it is a two-hand operation to fold. The Burley folds by pressing a single button on each side. For families who fold and store the trailer after every ride, this 15-second difference accumulates.
One frustration across the full test period: the Thule’s rain cover lives in a stuff sack attached inside the trailer. After six months of use, the stuff sack zipper on our test unit began snagging. Not a safety issue, but worth noting for a product at this price point.
