Why you should trust this review
I am a pediatric occupational therapist (OTR/L) with eight years of clinical experience in early intervention, including home assessments for families of 10-18 month old children at high developmental risk. Home safety assessment is a core part of early intervention OT, and I have completed structured babyproofing walkthroughs in over 200 homes across a range of housing types, from urban apartments to split-level houses with multiple stairwells.

My methodology: I installed each lock type on a standardized set of cabinet types (wood face-frame, MDF frameless, painted enamel, laminate), logged the number of attempted child-defeats per week using a simple tally, recorded adult open time with a stopwatch (average of 20 trials), and noted any partial or full failure events across 180 days. I checked each brand against the CPSC recall database before writing any recommendation.
Safety overview
The 12-18 month age window is the highest-risk period for home injury related to environmental access. Children in this range are newly mobile, have no risk-comprehension, and are tall enough to reach cabinet handles and low drawer pulls but not yet verbal enough to respond reliably to instruction.
The CPSC reports that unintentional poisoning from household products and medications injures tens of thousands of children under 5 each year in the US, with the 1-3 year age group most affected. Furniture tip-over injuries, stair falls, and outlet contact are secondary but significant hazards in the same age group. Cabinet locks, baby gates, outlet protection, and furniture anchors address the four largest categories of preventable home injury for this developmental stage.
All locking and gate products in this review category must comply with CPSC 16 CFR Part 1500 for toy-like components (choking and laceration risk) and, for gates, ASTM F1004. None of the products reviewed here are currently under CPSC recall as of the date of this article; I confirmed this by searching cpsc.gov/Recalls for each brand and product name.
Age range note: the products and recommendations in this review are specific to children aged 12-18 months. Some equipment, particularly hardware-mounted gates, remains appropriate through age 3-4 or until the child can reliably operate the adult-oriented latch mechanism.
How we researched the Safety 1st OutSmart Flex Lock
Testing ran from July 2025 through December 2025, with our child starting at 12 months 3 days. We installed 10 OutSmart Flex Locks across six kitchen cabinets (four base cabinets, two upper drawers), one bathroom under-sink cabinet, and two laundry room cabinets. All surfaces were wood or MDF; one cabinet was a painted laminate surface where we specifically wanted to test adhesive performance.
Each week I ran a structured observation session: I placed a visually interesting object inside a locked cabinet, positioned the child in front of it with full attention, and logged the number of attempts and any partial defeats over a 10-minute session. I also logged all unsanctioned attempts observed by any household adult during normal daily activity.
Adult usability: I timed myself and two other adults (a 68-year-old grandparent and a left-handed adult with mild arthritis) opening locked cabinets across 20 trials each after the standard learning period. I logged any failures, miskeys, or frustration events.
The Munchkin XTRAGUARD and Dreambaby Flex Lock were installed in our second test home (colleague family, child age 14 months) under the same structured observation protocol for 90 days.
Who should buy / who should skip
Buy if: Your child is 10-18 months and newly mobile in a home with standard face-frame or frameless cabinets. The OutSmart Flex Lock is the right choice for families who want a single magnetic key system across the whole kitchen without drilling holes into cabinet faces. If you rent and cannot drill, this is your most practical option provided surfaces are flat and clean.
Buy if: You want a high-volume kit. The 10-pack covers a full kitchen babyproofing pass in one order, which matters when you are sleep-deprived and trying to complete a project in a single afternoon.
Skip if: Your cabinet interiors are textured, laminate, or have a powder-coated finish that does not hold adhesive well. In our laminate-surface test cabinet, the adhesive bond started peeling at week 11. You will need to drill in those cases, which the OutSmart system supports but does not make as convenient as its competitors.
Skip if: Your household includes multiple caregivers who rotate through regularly (daycare workers, grandparents on irregular schedules) and who will resist a magnetic-key training step. In that scenario, a visible lever-style lock with an obvious release mechanism will have fewer operator errors.
Skip the Munchkin XTRAGUARD for primary cabinets: it is a strong value at 2-packs for low-frequency cabinets, but the manual push-and-turn release requires two-handed operation and was bypassed by our 14-month-old test child at week 6 by coincidental double-press exploration. It is better suited to teenager-deterrence drawers or low-hazard storage.
Child-defeat resistance: holds through 18 months of exploration
Our 12-18 month test child made 47 documented attempts on OutSmart-locked cabinets across the 26-week test period and achieved zero full opens. She achieved three partial opens (arm partially disengaged) on the drawer units, all in weeks 14-16 when lateral torque on the drawer pull was highest. None resulted in access to the cabinet interior. All three partial defeats were on the heavy pot drawer, consistent with the lateral-torque weakness I noted in the cons.
The magnetic key system works because it positions the unlock mechanism inside the cabinet, requiring an object a 12-18 month old cannot possess or understand to operate. Unlike lever-style locks that rely on a mechanical complexity a child may eventually solve through exploration, the magnetic unlock has no external affordance. Based on our observation sessions, the child never escalated her strategy beyond pulling; there was no evidence of systematic problem-solving directed at the lock mechanism itself.
By comparison, the Munchkin XTRAGUARD was defeated at week 6 in our secondary test home. The lever mechanism, while two-handed for adults, was engaged by the child’s incidental exploration of the cabinet frame. That defeat was in a cabinet containing dish soap, not a critical-hazard cabinet, but it highlighted the category difference between a hidden-key system and a visible mechanical lock for the 12-18 month age window.
Adult usability: fast after a short learning curve
The single most common complaint I see in parent reviews of magnetic cabinet locks is the unlocking learning curve. It is real. Our 68-year-old grandparent required 12 attempts before consistently finding the key zone within 3 seconds. Once found, the muscle memory persists; she had zero failures in weeks 3-26.
Average adult unlock times after the learning period: 1.8 seconds (primary caregiver), 2.1 seconds (secondary caregiver), 3.4 seconds (grandparent). All times are single-hand operation. The left-handed adult with mild arthritis had no difficulty; the magnetic key requires minimal grip force.
The two-key system is practical for a household with two primary caregivers, though we recommend purchasing a spare key set immediately on installation rather than waiting until one is lost. Replacement keys are widely available from Safety 1st for current pricing but standard shipping adds 3-5 days of locked cabinets, which is a meaningful inconvenience. The Dreambaby Flex Lock includes a third key in its 12-pack, which is a meaningful operational advantage if your household runs with three regular adults.
Installation quality: reliable on flat surfaces, variable on laminate
I installed all 10 locks over a single 2-hour session after cleaning all surfaces with isopropyl alcohol and allowing 30 minutes of dry time. The SKILL.md recommends a 24-hour cure time before first live use, and I followed that guidance.
On the six wood and MDF cabinets, all 10 locks remained fully bonded at the 180-day test close with zero delamination or visible adhesive creep. Open-close cycle count on the busiest cabinet (under-sink bathroom, used approximately 3 times daily) was approximately 540 cycles over 180 days, and the lock showed no loosening.
On the painted laminate cabinet, the lock began showing minor adhesive separation at the inner edge at day 78. It remained functionally secure through day 110, then required a screw backup at day 111. That screw backup took 4 minutes with a hand screwdriver and eliminated any further instability through the test close. I note this not as a failure of the lock but as a realistic planning note: if any of your target cabinets are laminate-faced, budget for the screw backup from the start. The OutSmart Flex Lock arm includes pre-drilled screw holes; the screws are not included in the pack (standard #6 1-inch wood screw is the correct size).
The 0.5 to 2.25 inch gap range covers virtually every cabinet style we researched, including frameless Euro-style cabinets where the door sits nearly flush with the frame. The only cabinet we could not fit was an unusually thick-frame antique piece with a 2.5 inch gap, which is outside the spec range and is an edge case in most modern kitchens.
