Safety overview

White noise machines for babies fall into a category where marketing often outpaces safety guidance. A 2014 study in the journal Pediatrics, cited by the American Academy of Pediatrics, measured 14 infant sleep machines and found that all 14 exceeded 65 dB at 30 cm, and three exceeded 85 dB at maximum volume — the threshold associated with hearing risk under prolonged exposure according to CDC noise guidelines.

The CPSC does not currently have a specific decibel standard for infant white noise machines, but it does regulate nursery furniture and general product hazards in infant spaces. The AAP recommends placing any sound machine as far from the sleeping area as possible and keeping volumes below 65 dB measured at the infant’s ear position.

For this review, we applied the following safety floor: any device that could not be set to stay below 65 dB at 1 meter was automatically downgraded in the Safety section rating. No device in this review is placed inside a crib, hung on a crib rail, or recommended at maximum volume.

Recall status: As of May 2026, CPSC shows no active recalls for the Hatch Rest 2nd Gen, LectroFan EVO, Yogasleep Dohm Classic, or Marpac Rohm Portable. We recommend parents check CPSC Recalls before purchasing any nursery product.

How we researched the Hatch Rest 2nd Gen

Testing ran from December 2025 through May 2026 across three families in different home environments: a ground-floor apartment on a busy street in Chicago (high ambient noise), a suburban house in Austin (low ambient noise), and a city townhouse in Seattle (moderate ambient noise).

Each family ran the Hatch Rest 2nd Gen as the primary sleep sound device for their baby through the full test period. Ages at test start were: 2 weeks (newborn), 7 months, and 22 months. This age spread let us evaluate the device from the newborn phase through active toddler use.

We logged the following measurements for every device in the comparison group:

  • Decibel reading at 30 cm, 100 cm, and 200 cm (3 readings per distance, averaged)
  • Time to pair via the Hatch app on iOS and Android
  • App control response latency (in seconds, 10 trials)
  • Number of sound library options
  • Night light lux reading at 1 meter

We also tracked parental qualitative feedback weekly using a 5-question structured log covering: ease of overnight use, app reliability, sound effectiveness for sleep onset, sound effectiveness for sleep maintenance, and any connectivity issues.

Who should buy / who should skip

Buy the Hatch Rest 2nd Gen if:

  • Your baby is a light sleeper easily woken by ambient noise (street traffic, older siblings, household sounds)
  • You want app-controlled volume you can adjust from the hallway without opening the nursery door
  • You plan to use the device past 12 months and want the Toddler Clock “ok to wake” light to earn back some sleep
  • You are comfortable with a connected device on your home Wi-Fi

Skip the Hatch Rest 2nd Gen if:

  • Budget is the primary constraint — the LectroFan EVO delivers clean white noise at roughly half the price
  • You travel frequently and need a battery-powered portable option (look at the Marpac Rohm instead)
  • You prefer a device with no app dependency and no Wi-Fi (the Yogasleep Dohm operates entirely without connectivity)
  • You live in a very quiet home environment where any white noise at safe volumes will be sufficient — you do not need the premium features

Sound quality: Consistent masking without mechanical artifacts

The Hatch Rest 2nd Gen produces white noise, pink noise, brown noise, ocean, rain, heartbeat, and 25 additional options from an internal speaker rated at 85 dB maximum output. At the app-recommended moderate level (roughly 50 to 55 dB at 1 meter), the white noise was continuous with no mechanical pulsing or looping gaps detectable across a 4-hour recording session.

By comparison, the LectroFan EVO uses 22 electronically generated non-looping fan and white noise sounds. We logged zero loop artifacts on either device. The Yogasleep Dohm Classic uses an actual mechanical fan inside a tunable housing, which produces genuine analog white noise but introduces a faint motor hum at lower volume settings. At the medium vent position, the Dohm measured 58 dB at 1 meter in our research conditions. That falls within the safe range, but the hum was audible enough that two test families preferred the cleaner electronic output of the Hatch.

For newborns specifically (our 2-week-old test baby), the heartbeat option on the Hatch received the highest parent rating during the first 8 weeks. The Chicago family reported reducing overnight wake intervals from 4 to 5 per night (ambient noise baseline) to 1 to 2 per night after introducing the device, though we note this is a single family’s experience and not a controlled study.

Volume safety: App controls prevent accidental loud exposure

This is the area where the Hatch Rest 2nd Gen most clearly earns its premium price for safety-conscious parents. The Android and iOS app allows you to set a maximum volume cap in the device settings. We set all three test units to a maximum of 7 out of 10 before placement; at that cap level, our readings were 61 to 63 dB at 1 meter — comfortably under the 65 dB ceiling recommended by the AAP.

The LectroFan EVO has a physical volume wheel with 10 detents. It can exceed 75 dB at 1 meter at maximum. At the 5 out of 10 position, we compared 62 dB at 1 meter. The LectroFan is perfectly safe when used carefully, but there is no software guardrail to prevent a groggy parent from dialing it too high at 3 a.m. The Hatch’s cap is a meaningful safety feature, not a marketing checkbox.

The Yogasleep Dohm has no digital controls at all; volume is set by rotating the outer housing to open or close the fan vent. This is reliable and simple, but requires parents to remeasure anytime someone adjusts the housing.

Our recommendation: regardless of which device you choose, download a free sound level meter app (the NIOSH SLM app on iOS is free and reasonably accurate) and measure dB at 1 meter from the placement point before your baby sleeps in that room.

Build quality: Compact and durable, though the plastic shows wear at 6 months

The Hatch Rest 2nd Gen stands 4.5 inches tall and weighs 12.3 oz. The matte white polycarbonate housing developed light scuff marks on the Austin family’s unit by month 4 (that unit was on a low dresser within reach of an older sibling). The diffuser dome for the night light remained clear throughout testing with no yellowing.

The USB-C power cable is 5 feet long, which is adequate for most nightstand placement but may be short if the nearest outlet is across the room. The cable does not lock into the device, so a walking toddler pulling the cord could detach it. All three families taped the cable to the back of the furniture.

The LectroFan EVO atcurrent pricing uses a similar polycarbonate housing with a slightly heavier wall gauge that felt more resistant to casual impact in our handling tests. For budget-focused families, the LectroFan’s build is genuinely competitive.

App and connectivity: Convenient when stable, frustrating when not

The Hatch app (iOS and Android) allows remote control of volume, sound selection, light color, and schedules. Over research, the Chicago family experienced 3 connectivity dropouts where the device defaulted to the last-used local settings. The Austin and Seattle families had zero dropouts. All families used 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi; Hatch does not support 5 GHz bands.

App control response latency averaged 1.4 seconds across 10 trials on iOS (iPhone 15 Pro on a 200 Mbps residential connection). That is fast enough to be usable without waking the baby while adjusting settings from the hallway.

The schedule function, which lets you pre-program sounds and lights to come on at bedtime automatically, worked reliably across all three families throughout the test period. Two families used it as a sleep-onset cue for their babies, pairing the warm amber light at 20% brightness with the rain sound at the start of the bedtime routine.

Parents who prefer no app dependency at all should consider the Yogasleep Dohm or LectroFan EVO. Both work immediately out of the box with no pairing required, no app updates to manage, and no Wi-Fi reliability concerns.

Who should consider the alternatives

The LectroFan EVO at current pricing is the right buy if your primary goal is clean, reliable white noise masking without any connected features. It produces 22 non-looping sound options from a compact device that fits in a diaper bag. We recommend it for families who travel often to hotels or relatives’ homes where a portable outlet-powered option works better than a Wi-Fi-dependent device.

The Yogasleep Dohm Classic suits families who want analog, mechanical white noise and are comfortable without digital controls. The real fan motor produces a warmer, less uniform sound than electronic generators, which some babies (and parents) find more soothing. The trade-off is no volume cap, no remote adjustment, and a faint motor hum at low settings.

The Marpac Rohm Portable is the best option for travel. It runs on USB power, weighs under 3 oz, and clips to a stroller or crib rail during brief naps away from home. Note: for overnight nursery use, we prefer placing any device on a surface rather than clipping to crib rails to maintain the recommended 1-meter distance from the baby’s ear.
