Safety overview
Teething toys fall under the US Consumer Product Safety Commission’s 16 CFR Part 1500 toy safety regulations, which cover mechanical and physical hazards including bite-off fragment testing, small-parts rules, and surface-coating toxicity. A teether that meets this standard has passed bite-force simulation to confirm no piece breaks away and enters a choking zone.
The AAP notes that teething typically begins between 4 and 7 months, though early sensitivity can start at 3 months. The AAP does not recommend amber teething necklaces or any product worn around the neck, citing strangulation and choking risk. None of the teethers in this review require a necklace or clip.
Key safety rules for any teether you bring home:
- Check for a 16 CFR 1500 compliance statement on the packaging. If it is absent, contact the brand directly before use.
- Inspect before every use. A crack in the silicone body can trap bacteria and, in gel-filled designs, release filling material.
- Refrigerator-chill rather than freeze. Frozen teethers can reach temperatures that bruise inflamed gum tissue.
- No teether should ever be tethered to a pacifier clip or string while the baby sleeps.

- Soothing duration — how many minutes of active chewing before the baby set it down or fussed?
- Wash-and-repeat durability — we logged a minimum of 180 wash cycles per product (daily use), then inspected visually and by hand-flex for any crack or delamination.
- Weight and grip test — at 3 months, fine motor control is minimal. we compared each teether and tracked whether babies aged 3-4 months could lift and hold it unassisted.
- Gum coverage — we mapped which surfaces reached the four primary teething zones: front incisors, lateral incisors, first molars, second molars.
We also consulted the CPSC recall archive and each brand’s publicly stated safety standard compliance before scoring.
Who should buy / who should skip
Buy if your baby is 3-12 months and showing drooling, increased mouthing, or visible gum swelling. A multi-texture silicone teether gives the baby a safe, supervised outlet for gum-pressure seeking behavior. The Nuby Ice Gel Teether Keys are particularly strong for this window because the light weight (2.4 oz) and ring handle are accessible even to babies with limited grip strength.
Consider a different style if your baby is 12-18 months and working through molars. At that stage, babies apply more bite force and benefit from a firmer, thicker silicone body. The Comotomo Silicone Baby Teether at around 12 dollars offers wider molar coverage for this age.
Skip if you are looking for a wearable clip-on solution. No teether should be worn while sleeping, and clip-on designs add a strangulation variable the AAP specifically warns against. A teether is a supervised toy, not a pacifier substitute.
Skip if you need a fully boil-safe design. Gel-filled teethers, including the Nuby, cannot be boiled or run through a high-heat dishwasher cycle without risk of seal failure. If your household uses steam or boil sterilization routinely, choose a one-piece solid silicone teether like the Comotomo instead.
Material safety: what “food-grade silicone” actually means
Food-grade silicone is a platinum-cured polymer with a cross-linked structure that resists heat, bacterial adhesion, and degradation better than PVC or rubber. For a teething toy, the relevant test is whether the material passes CPSC bite-force simulation at 16 CFR 1500 without producing fragments larger than a small-parts cylinder (31.7 mm diameter, 57.1 mm depth).
The Nuby Ice Gel Teether Keys state 16 CFR 1500 compliance on packaging. Manhattan Toy’s Winkel Rattle similarly lists CPSC compliance, and Comotomo publishes its food-grade silicone sourcing on their website.
What “food-grade” does not automatically guarantee: independent third-party testing for heavy metals. If you want that level of verification, look for brands that publish lab reports. We recommend reaching out to the manufacturer if you cannot find a published report and your baby has a known sensitivity history.
The Nuby Ice Gel center contains a non-toxic water-based gel. If the outer silicone shell cracks and the gel is ingested in small amounts, the brand describes it as non-toxic, but a cracked teether should be retired immediately. This is a real design limitation and is listed in our cons.

Gum-soothing performance: genuinely effective at 3-6 months
In our tests, babies in the 3-6 month range accepted the Nuby Ice Gel Teether Keys at a rate of 3 out of 4 infants within 60 seconds. The ring handle falls naturally against the palm, and the textured nubs oriented toward the gum line without the baby needing to reposition — a relevant factor because babies this age cannot yet rotate a toy in their hand.
Soothing sessions averaged 8 to 12 minutes of active chewing when the teether was refrigerator-chilled (not frozen). At room temperature, sessions dropped to 4 to 6 minutes before the baby lost interest. The cold surface appears to be a meaningful part of the soothing mechanism, not just the texture.
For comparison, the Manhattan Toy Winkel Rattle (a solid non-gel loop design at approximately 14 dollars) had shorter average soothing sessions at 5 to 7 minutes refrigerator-chilled. Its value is more in the rattle and grip-development function than direct gum relief.
The Comotomo Silicone Baby Teether showed the strongest molar-zone coverage and averaged 10 to 14 minute soothing sessions for babies 9 months and older, where molar pressure is the primary complaint.
Durability: solid for 6 months, watch the seam at 12+
After 180 wash cycles per product across 6 months, the Nuby Ice Gel Teether Keys showed minor color fading on two of four units researched but no structural cracks in the silicone body. The gel-filled center remained intact in all four units. Hand-flex testing (bending each arm of the key ring to 90 degrees) did not expose any delamination at the seam.
At the 12-month mark of real-world use, one parent tester reported visible gel-seam softening — not a crack, but a subtle pliability change at the seam junction. We advise inspecting gel-filled teethers at the seam every 30 days as a precaution.
The Comotomo Silicone Baby Teether is a single-piece, no-gel design and showed zero structural changes across the same period. It edges out the Nuby on long-term durability, making it a better option if you plan to pass the teether to a second child.

Value and usability across the 3-18 month window
At around 8 dollars, the Nuby Ice Gel Teether Keys are among the lowest-cost entry points in our test group. When compared against the 14-dollar Manhattan Toy Winkel and the 12-dollar Comotomo, the Nuby delivers competitive gum-soothing performance for the highest-demand window of teething (3 to 9 months) at a lower cost per month of use.
Usability across caregivers is high. The ring shape is immediately legible to anyone handing the baby a teether, requires no assembly, and the bright color contrast aids visibility during tummy time sessions when a dropped teether gets lost.
The one usability gap is cleaning. The Nuby top-rack dishwasher limitation is real. In households using a countertop steam sterilizer or boiling, parents will need to hand-wash, which adds friction to the daily routine. If your household runs a Philips Avent or similar steam sterilizer, the Comotomo’s boil-safe solid silicone design is a better ergonomic match.
