Convert stages: how far does it really go
The Kalani moves through four stages: standard crib, toddler bed (using the included toddler rail), daybed, and full-size bed. The first three transitions are straightforward and the included hardware covers the toddler conversion. The full-size conversion needs a separately purchased kit and full-size bed rails, which adds cost and a shopping step you may not anticipate when you are in the nursery-buying moment. That is worth knowing upfront. The mattress height drops across three positions: start high for a newborn when bending over an active baby is not yet a concern, and move it lower as your child can sit or pull up. On the Kalani, the lower two positions are generously spaced so lowering the mattress at the right developmental stage is easy without re-reading the manual.
Where it gives ground
Two honest drawbacks to name clearly. First, the silhouette is plain. The panel-side design is clean and neutral, but it does not have the visual character of a spindle crib like the Babyletto Hudson or a farmhouse-style frame. If nursery aesthetics are a primary driver for you, there are more decorative options at a higher price. Second, all full-size bed conversions require that separate kit purchase, which can feel like a hidden cost if you did not budget for it. Neither of these affects sleep safety, but both are worth weighing against the price advantage.

The DaVinci Kalani suits families who want a safe, non-toxic, flexible crib at a value price point and are comfortable with a minimal aesthetic. It is not the crib for someone whose nursery plan centers on a statement piece.
