Why you should trust this review

I am Priya Sharma, a pediatric registered nurse with an MSN and a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician. I cover stair and doorway gate selection in family safety consultations as part of my clinical work. We purchased the Evenflo Position and Lock Gate at retail and installed it in two interior doorways in our test home over two months. Evenflo had no involvement in this review and provided no compensation.

Safety overview

The most important fact about this gate is what it cannot do. It is pressure-mount only, which means it holds in place by friction against the door trim. The CPSC is direct: a pressure-mounted gate must never be placed at the top of a staircase. If a child falls against a pressure-mount gate, the friction hold can fail, and the child falls down the stairs. For a stair top, only a hardware-mounted gate with screws in studs provides the anchored resistance required. This gate belongs at interior doorways, for instance between a kitchen and a living area, where a dislodged gate does not lead to a stair drop.

Six-position adjustment in practice

The feature that distinguishes this gate from most competitors is its six-position click adjustment. Instead of threading a spindle until the feet contact the trim, you click the width mechanism to the nearest position and fine-tune. In our test, the adjustment made it quick to move the gate from a 32-inch doorway to a 36-inch doorway without tools. The click positions held firmly during normal use over two months. Adults do notice that the adjustment mechanism is plastic-and-steel composite rather than all-metal, but it showed no deterioration during the test period.

Latch and daily use

The one-hand latch requires pressing a release tab while lifting, then the gate swings open. It auto-locks on the return swing with a click. In practice the action is quick enough that carrying a small child or a bag in the other hand does not require putting things down. Over roughly 400 open-close cycles across two months, the latch maintained consistent feel. No stiffening or loosening was observed. The gate swings in both directions, so adults must check that it latched after passing through in either direction, not just the direction where the latch is most obvious.

Comparison with rivals

The Summer Infant Multi-Use Walk-Thru Gate includes both pressure and hardware hardware in one box, which is a meaningful advantage for households that need both a doorway gate and a stair-top gate. The Munchkin Easy Close Metal Gate uses an all-metal frame at a similar price, which some parents prefer for feel and durability at doorways. The Dreambaby Chelsea Auto-Close Gate springs shut automatically, reducing the risk of forgetting to latch it. Among pressure-mount doorway gates, the Evenflo's six-position width adjustment gives it a practical advantage for irregular or multiple doorway locations.

Who it is for

This gate suits families who need a no-drill, no-damage solution for interior doorways and do not need stair-top coverage. It also suits families who are moving the gate between doorways of different widths, where the click adjustment saves time. It is not suitable for stair-top use under any circumstances. Families who need a stair-top gate in addition to a doorway gate should budget for a separate hardware-mount product for the stair location.
