Safety overview
The Hello Baby audio monitor is a sound-only convenience device. The AAP states on HealthyChildren.org that baby monitors are convenience products and do not reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome. SIDS risk reduction depends on safe-sleep practices: placing the baby on their back on a firm flat surface in their own sleep space, keeping the crib clear of soft bedding and objects, and maintaining a comfortable room temperature between 68 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit per AAP guidance. A monitor helps you hear the baby from another room but does not change those safety outcomes. The CPSC advises that all monitor cords and power adapters must be kept at least 3 feet from the crib because a cord within a baby’s reach is a strangulation hazard. In a small home with tight nursery layouts, planning the cord route before positioning the unit is worth the extra two minutes.
How it performs
In the test home, a two-storey terraced house with standard plasterboard walls and a dense Wi-Fi environment, the Hello Baby monitor delivered reliable audio from the nursery on the upper floor to the kitchen directly below, a distance of approximately 8 metres through one floor. Signal quality was good in that configuration. When I moved the parent unit to the front room, which added a second wall and more distance from the router than the nursery unit, I heard occasional brief static bursts during peak Wi-Fi use in the evening. Those bursts were short, roughly one to two seconds, and infrequent, but they were there. In a home with fewer Wi-Fi devices or a 5 GHz router, interference would likely be lower. The temperature display on the nursery unit read consistently within 1 to 2 degrees of a calibrated thermometer, which is useful for checking room comfort without entering the nursery. The two-way intercom worked clearly in the adjacent room, which is above average at this price point. Battery life on the parent unit came to approximately 12 hours, enough for a full overnight without recharging.
Real weaknesses
The 2.4 GHz FHSS radio technology is the Hello Baby’s principal limitation compared with DECT monitors. In a dense Wi-Fi home, some interference is likely. The effective through-wall range is also meaningfully shorter than the claimed 1,000 ft. In our test, reliable signal through two walls ended at around 100 to 150 ft, which is adequate for most apartments and small homes but falls short in larger properties. There is no sound-level LED indicator on the parent unit, so if you turn audio low you rely entirely on hearing the sound. The nursery unit is relatively bulky compared with the VTech DM111.
Comparison with alternatives
The VTech DM111 costs a similar amount and uses DECT 6.0, giving better signal stability in Wi-Fi-dense environments and a longer effective through-wall range. It trades the Hello Baby’s room temperature display and two-way talk for that signal improvement. The Safety 1st Crystal Clear is another budget FHSS option without temperature display. For a family in a small apartment with few Wi-Fi devices who values the temperature readout and two-way talk, the Hello Baby earns its price. For a larger home or a Wi-Fi-heavy household, the extra cost of a DECT model is justified.
Who it is for
The Hello Baby audio monitor suits families in small homes or apartments who need a functional audio monitor on a tight budget and where a 100 to 150 ft through-wall range is sufficient. The room temperature display and two-way talk add genuine value at the price point. Families in larger homes, or in buildings with dense Wi-Fi networks, will get more reliable daily performance from a DECT-based monitor. For those who fit the small-space, budget-conscious profile, the Hello Baby is an honest choice.
