Frequently asked questions about Nursery

What does AAP say about safe sleep?
The AAP recommends placing babies on their back to sleep, on a firm, flat surface in their own sleep space with no pillows, bumpers, positioners, or loose bedding. Room-sharing without bed-sharing for at least the first 6 months is also recommended.
Is a secondhand cot safe?
A secondhand cot can be safe if it meets current CPSC safety standards, has no recalled parts, all hardware is present, the mattress fits snugly with no gaps, and the structure is undamaged. Avoid drop-side cots and pre-2011 models in the US.
What mattress firmness is safe for babies?
Babies need a firm, flat sleep surface. A firm mattress is one that does not conform to the shape of a baby's head when pressed. Soft mattresses increase the risk of suffocation. GREENGUARD Gold certification indicates low chemical off-gassing.
