Frequently asked questions about Safety Equipment

What are the most important babyproofing steps?
CPSC and AAP recommend: installing safety gates at the top and bottom of stairs, securing furniture and TVs to walls, covering electrical outlets, using stair gates with a straight bar at the bottom (not pressure-mounted at top of stairs), and locking away medicines and cleaning products.
When should I start babyproofing?
Start babyproofing before your baby becomes mobile — typically around 4-6 months. Babies can begin rolling and reaching unexpectedly. Complete stair gates, cabinet locks, and furniture anchors before they start crawling at around 7-9 months.
Are pressure-mounted gates safe at the top of stairs?
No. Pressure-mounted gates should never be used at the top of stairs — they can be pushed out by a child's weight. Only hardware-mounted (screw-in) gates with a straight bottom bar should be used at stair tops. ASTM F1292 compliance is the key standard to look for.
